EU-TRTA awards 10 kukum dryers to coconut farmers

EU-TRTA embarked on a two-week mission on December 2006 to validate the proposed recipients of the kukum dryers from the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA). The proposed recipients are farmer-cooperatives. Ten cooperatives qualify as recipients of the dryer.

The validation sought to check the trading performance and the management capacity of the cooperatives particularly with the new capital goods such the dryer that TRTA is providing to them.

TRTA extends this assistance to help farmers meet the market demand on aflatoxin- and PAH-free copra. Aflatoxin and PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) are known cancer-causing substances that come about from improper drying of copra.
